Happy Mother’s Day from Rotary District 5300

Today, we pause to honor the extraordinary strength, compassion, and resilience of mothers everywhere—especially those within our Rotary family who so selflessly nurture both their own families and the communities we serve.

As Rotarians, we are inspired by the countless ways in which mothers lead with love: mentoring future generations, championing service projects, and embodying the ideals of Service Above Self.

This commitment is reflected in Rotary’s work around the globe—particularly in our efforts to improve maternal and child health, one of Rotary’s key Areas of Focus. Whether by increasing access to prenatal care, supporting nutrition initiatives, or strengthening health education, we are proud to stand with mothers to build healthier, more sustainable futures.

On this special day, we extend our deepest gratitude to the mothers who give so much of themselves so that others may thrive. May your day be filled with peace, love, and the recognition you so richly deserve.

For those who knew Gordie, a Glendora Rotarian, as well as an esteemed presence within the high school music band community, Glendora Citizens of the Year and life member, and quite the character when he would lead the Sergeant-at-Arms at any district conference (his legacy lives on, as this past weekend the Sergeant-at-Arms were dressed up with Disney ears). Gordie passed away in February.Image attachment

That same day, the vaccine would be licensed, and we know it today as the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV).

In 1955, more than 10 million children received one or more injections of the Salk vaccine. Within one year, polio cases and deaths in the US had been nearly halved, a trend that continued and made a vision of polio-free world a possibility.

What is Rotary?

Rotary is an international membership organization made up of diverse groups of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country. Being a member is an opportunity to take action and make a difference.

How Did We Get Here?

We’ve been making history and bringing our world closer together for more than 100 years. The first Rotary club was started in Chicago, Illinois, in 1905 by an attorney named Paul Harris. Harris wanted to bring together a group of professionals with different backgrounds and skills as a way to exchange ideas and form meaningful acquaintances. In August 1910, there were 16 Rotary clubs in the United States and by 1912 Rotary started to expand internationally. By July 1925, Rotary clubs existed on six continents. Today, there are more than 35,000 clubs, in almost every country in the world.

Although Rotary clubs develop autonomous service programs, all Rotarians worldwide are united in a campaign for the global eradication of polio. Through the PolioPlus program, Rotarians have contributed more than $2.1 billion to date and provided an army of volunteers to promote and assist at national immunization days in polio-endemic countries around the world.

Find out more about Rotary by visiting the Rotary International website.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do

  1. Is it the TRUTH?

  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

WE CONNECT PEOPLE

Rotary unites more than a million people

Through Rotary clubs, people from all continents and cultures come together to exchange ideas, and form friendships and professional connections while making a difference in their backyards and around the world.

WE TRANSFORM COMMUNITIES

We take action locally and globally

Each day, our members pour their passion, integrity, and intelligence into completing projects that have a lasting impact. We persevere until we deliver real, lasting solutions.

WE SOLVE PROBLEMS

No challenge is too big for us

For more than 110 years, we’ve bridged cultures and connected continents to champion peace, fight illiteracy and poverty, promote clean water and sanitation, and fight disease.
